Teachers and Students of the Rietveld Glass Department: a Selection
In 1969, the glas department was started at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam (NL) under guidance of Sybren Valkema. The work of some of the students and teachers is shown in this exhibition.
Xandra Bremers studied between 2007 and 2010 at the Academy. Her work refers to the fragility of life and the decay that results when organic material dies.
Simsa Cho was trained at the Rietveld from 1986 until 19890. He shows animalistic and anthropomorphic sculptures based on his Japanese roots.
Mieke Groot trained first at the Jewelry department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie (1969-1974) and afterwards she went to the Glass department from 1974-1976. She was a tutor of the Glass Department of the Rietveld from 1981 until 2000. She manipulates the surface in her glass works. She applies different forms of texture by the use of enamel, which contrasts by the coloring schemes.
Richard Meitner studied from 1974 until 1975 at the Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunst, Amsterdam (NL) and finished in 1975 his training at the Rietveld. He teached together with Mieke Groot from 1981 until 2000 at the Academy. He is experimenting with fiber glass that leads to free standing or wall objects. They are painted with special enamels. He shows new pieces that are covered with a granular colored coating.
Caroline Prisse studied from 1990 until 1995 at the Sculpture Department and from 1995 until 1997 at the Glass Department. From 2003 until 2012, she was coordinator and teacher of the glass department. Her work refers to the relationship between nature, men and the industrial “achievements of society”.
Frederic van Overschelde was a student at the Academy from 2002-2003. His work represent “short stories” in which the combination of glass with other materials (e.g. keys, leather) symbolizes the human condition.
The exhibition runs from 18/02/2017 until 21/05/2017 and is open on Saturday and Sunday from 14:00-16:00 and after appointment (cell phone nr 0494-285894)
