Studio Glass from the Netherlands– Containers
In the 1960’s, the studio glass movement started in The Netherlands and several glass artists founded their own studios. In addition, the Glass Department was initiated by Sybren Valkema at the Rietveld Academy, in Amsterdam. He was followed by Mieke Groot and Richard Meitner as teachers.
These two artists founded also their own glass studio “General Glass Studio” in the Bellamystraat in Amsterdam in 1976. They started with small containers, that increased in sized and in Richard Meitner’s case developed into sculptural works, while Mieke Groot experimented with different decoration techniques.
Willem Heesen was a glass designer, who worked at the Royal Glass Factory in Leerdam. In 1977, he founded “De Oude Horn” glass studio in Acquoy and he was joined by his son Bernard Heesen in 1984.
The work of Willem Heesen in mainly inspired by natural surrounding of the old glass mill, while Bernard Heesen’s work is based on baroque forms.
Other glass artists, some of them graduates of the Rietveld Academy, produced work in glass factories or in small studies. The work of Simsa Cho, Barbara Nanning, Hanneke Fokkelman, Jelena Popadic is shown in this exhibition.
