Glass designers
Through the history of glass making, factories or compagnies have produced specific designs for their products. The designers could be employed by the factory itself or were artists, who were asked to design objects.
In this exhibition, works of several designers and artists, who have made designs for different glass factories/compagnies are shown.
Kosta Boda (Sweden) started as a merger of the glassworks in Kosta, Boda and Åfors in 1742. Since 2005, Orrefors Kosta Boda AB is part of New Wave Group AB. In 1898, Gunnar Wennerberg was hired as the glassworks’ first own designer. Since then, many well-known designers and artists have worked with Kosta Boda such as Vicke Lindstrand, Erik Höglund, Monica Backström, Ulrika Hydman Vallien, Åsa Jungnelius, Ellen Ehk Åkesson, Göran Wärff, Bertil Vallien.
Glasfabriek Leerdam, a Dutch producer of glassware products based in Leerdam, the Netherlands, was established in 1765 and was closed in 2020, Designing and glassblowing were in the past strictly separated. Several well-known designers as Hendrik Petrus Berlage, Karel de Bazel, Andries Copier, Sybren Valkema, and Willem Heesen have contributed to the Royal Leerdam reputation with a wide range of glassware. The factory also asked artists, as Richard Meitner or Maria Van Kesteren to design their glass work.
Val-Saint Lambert is a Belgian factory, that produces crystal works since 1826 and followed the prevalent fashions, such as art nouveau and art deco. It also asked artists to propose glass designs, that sometimes were produced. The factory is mainly known for their hand-cut crystal vases.
Ikea is a Swedish multinational conglomerate, founded in 1943 that designs and sells ready-to-assemble furniture. The group is primarily known for its modernist furniture designs and its simple approach to interior design.
Since the 1990’s, IKEA also added low cost glass vases to its catalogue and since that time, more than 60 series have been developed. Besides its own design team, IKEA employed different Nordic and other designers, (e.g. Maria Vinka, Anne Nilsson, Pia Amsell and Barbro Wesslander, Christina Halskov and Hanne Dalsgaart, Martin Bergström, Knut Hagberg and Marianne Hagberg, Mathias Hahn, Anna Efverlund, Johanna Jelinek, Emma Dafnäs, Per Ivar Ledang, Ola Wihlborg, Erika Pekkari, Äsa Gray, Lisa Hilland, Susan Pryke, Inma Bermudez, Ilse Crawford, Hanna Grann Dalrot, Hanna Klarqvist, Mikael Axelsson, Iina Vuorivirta), who produced different designs for IKEA vases.
Memphis Milano was an Italian design and architecture group founded by Ettore Sottsass. It was active from 1980 to 1987. The group designed postmodern furniture, lighting, fabrics, carpets, ceramics, metal objects and also glass works.
The exhibition runs from 02/07/2023 until 07/01/2024 and is open by appointment.
