50 years of Rietveld Glass
This year, the Glass Department of the Rietveld Academy celebrates its 50th anniversary. It was founded in 1969 by Sybren Valkema and since then many artists have been completed their education at this institution.
In this exhibition, the works of some of them is shown. It show the variety of students, their different manner of expression and the multitude of glass techniques that are teached and have been used.
Xandra Bremers’ s work is inspired by the transiency of life. Her animals show the decay that takes place ones a creature dies and dissipates in nature.
Simsa Cho works around the theme of shoes, that are transformed into animals. They constitute the base on which a shoe is constructed. Next to this theme of shoes, the deities of Japan are another source of inspiration.
Mieke Groot was a tutor of the Glass Department at the Rietveld from 1981 until 2000. She manipulates the surface in her glass work. She applies different forms of texture by the use of enamel, which contrasts with the other parts of the vase. She uses different colors and surfaces to get a specific texture. Although her forms are referring to bowls, her latest vases have an architectural feeling due to the addition of different covers.
Richard Meitner teached together with Mieke Groot from 1981 until 2000 at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. He is experimenting with fiber glass led to free standing or wall object that are painted with special enamels and colors.
The exhibition runs from 04/05/2019 until 05/06/2019 and can be visited by appointment.
