Dutch ceramics: from abstraction to figuration
Ceramics produced by Dutch artists are world renowned. It started by the teachings of Jan Van der Vaart at the Rietveld Academy in the 1980-90’s. He educated a whole generation of ceramists, based on the principles of ‘De Stijl’, with simplification of the form and clear lines. Some of the artists are moving away from this concept and figuration is becoming the main focus of their work.
Mieke Blits shows her double vases. The work has an organic feeling increased by the soft coloring.
Although Wouter Dam started with simplified forms, by using his skills on the wheel, he creates flowing lines to construct his vessels.
Liesbeth Kamps hand builds her containers with layers of clay and uses color to create a specific atmosphere.
Daniel Levi gets his inspiration from architecture in Eastern regions The themes are very recognizable and figurative.
Esther Stasse constructs geometric black forms around a container. The work is very architectural and is a continuation of the work she is making since her graduation at the Rietveld Academy.
Anton Reijnders combines different materials and forms to one sculptural object. The series ‘Nomen nescio’ reflect that there is no name apt to identify the object and that the viewer has to look for its stillness.
Gertjan van der Stelt starts with a basic form and by combining them obtains 3-dimensional objects that fills the space around openings in the work. He makes this basic form his own by adding structure and color.
